The Healthcare sector is in high demand of skilled and educated professionals for providing care toward the elderly, dementia, terminal illnesses, as well as other vulnerable members in the community.
Caregiving has evolved through the years into a more scientific and structured profession. This Diploma in Caregiving from Trent Global College is designed to imbue learners with necessary knowledge and skills to work collaboratively and respectfully across the human lifespan to promote both health and deliver recovery orientated and person-centred care in the community.
Learners shall be able to provide valuable community care through practices, exercises, and the cultivating of healthy habits for the patients to enhance their holistic health.

17 months (Part Time) Course Delivery: The course will be delivered in a formal classroom setup, self-study, group work and presentations, and coursework.

Fundamentals of Caregiving
Students will be able to:
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of a caregiver.
- Provide person-centred care and display empathy when relating to others in need.
- Gain knowledge of ethics, professionalism and legal issues in caregiving including self-care, identify possible signs of abuse and stress management.
- Develop competency in first aid and life-saving procedures including basic cardiac life support and use of Auto External Defibrillator.
Care Practices
Students will be able to:
- Recognise infection, the common causes and basic management.
- Perform personal care and hygiene procedures safely (e.g. effective infection control).
- Perform basic activities of daily living including feeding, showering, dressing, and grooming
- Perform basic wound care
- Have basic knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology
- Develop, implement, monitor, and provide feedback on individualized care plans.
- Demonstrate proficiency in care planning and documentation
Mobility and Ambulation Assistance
Students will be able to:
- Ensure workplace safety and health in a healthcare setting.
- Assist in mobility and use of mobility aids
- Assess and check the environment, level of assistance from patient, equipment, and items to prevent falls.
- Exhibit proficiency in lifting and transferring techniques, safe turning, and positioning.
- Implement fall prevention strategies and approaches.
- Perform exercises and basic physical therapy including the use of active and passive range of motion.
Nutrition and Medication
Students will be able to:
- Understand the importance of nutrition and restricted diets.
- Able to prepare, feed, and manage different consistency of fluids and food.
- Demonstrate competency in nasogastric (NG) tube feeding.
- Recognize the signs of aspiration and pneumonia.
- Exhibit knowledge of medication administration and management
- Community Health and Social Care
Students will be able to:
- Understand the importance of healthcare in the community setting.
- Demonstrate knowledge of common chronic diseases such as, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, stroke, dementia, and others.
- Monitor physiological parameters such as height, weight, body mass index, temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, glucose levels and oxygen saturation.

Geriatric Care and Management
Students will be able to:
- Understand the biopsychosocial challenges faced by older adults.
- Demonstrate knowledge of common geriatric syndromes and their management.
- Provide comprehensive care for patients with cognitive impairment including Dementia.
- Develop and implement effective end-of-life care.
Advanced Disability Support and Physiology
Students will be able to:
- Identify the common biopsychosocial faced by patients with short-term and long-term disabilities, and develop strategies to address these challenges.
- Demonstrate knowledge of common assistive technologies, such as wheelchairs, communication devices, and prosthetics, and how to assist patients in using them effectively.
- Develop a plan for addressing the specific needs of patients with short-term and long-term disabilities, taking into account their medical history, current condition, and goals for recovery.
Home Care for Infants and Children
Students will be able to:
- Identify the specific care needs of infants and children, including feeding, diapering, showering, and managing common health conditions.
- Understand a child’s developmental milestones and how to support children’s physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development.
- Understand the importance of child safety and injury prevention, including safe sleep practices, childproofing the home, and responding to medical emergencies.
- Develop strategies for managing common behavioural challenges in infants and children, including sleep issues, separation anxiety, and temper tantrums.
Supporting Special Learning and Behavioural Needs at Home
Students will be able to:
- Identify common learning and behavioural challenges faced by individuals with special needs, such as autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and learning disabilities.
- Understand the importance of structure and routine in promoting learning and behavioural success and develop strategies for establishing and maintaining routines at home.
- Demonstrate knowledge of common behavioural management techniques, such as positive reinforcement, redirection, and consequences, and apply these techniques in a consistent and effective manner.
- Develop communication skills that promote understanding and effective interaction with individuals with special needs, including active listening and use of visual cues.
Internship
Students will be able to:
- Practice and execute skills and knowledge in real world settings.
- Gain practical experience and skills in the various domains.
- Develop professional communication and networking skills.
- Develop a deeper understanding of industry practices and expectations.
For students unable to do the Internship, they will be required to submit a Research Project
